What is Workplace Bullying?

What is Workplace Bullying?

What is Workplace Bullying?

Bully boss abusing employee.

Workplace bullying is repeated, health-harming mistreatment by one or more employees of an employer: abusive conduct that is either verbal abuse; or behaviors which are threatening, intimidating, or humiliating; or work sabotage, in some combination. Abuse at work is the only form of abuse in America that is not yet taboo.

Bullying is a systematic campaign of interpersonal destruction that jeopardizes your health, your career, the job you once loved. Bullying is a non-physical, non-homicidal form of violence. Because it is abusive it causes both emotional and stress-related physical harm.

Freedom from Bullies Week is a chance to break through the shame and silence surrounding bullying. It is a week to be daring and bold.

The power of workplace bullying is its ability to stay hidden in plain view. Make every workplace safe and take a stand against workplace bullying!

The Healthy Workplace Bill has been update with new language as of January 2021.

Freedom of Workplace Bullies Week

Please take the time to write to your City Councilmembers and your County Supervisors to add a Proclamation to the October 2021 Agenda.

BREAK THE SILENCE!

– Tell co-workers, friends, and family.
– Put your health first.
– Schedule a coaching appointment.
– Talk to an attorney.
– Do not believe the BIG LIE about you.
– Reclaim your dignity — fight back or find a new job.

– Don’t give in to fear, e.g., of being the next target.
– Share your bullying experiences with your targeted friend.
– Offer help. Targets are too ashamed to ask.
– Validate the target’s emotions, even if scary to you.
– Organize others AS A GROUP to confront the bully.
– Do not side with bullies against your friend, even when ordered to.
– Reinforce the target’s humanity. It’s the social compact among us all.

Linda Crockett

Linda Crockett is the founder of the Workplace Bullying Resource Centre, and ABRC Counselling Services. She believes the first steps to enhancing psychological safety in the workplace is to build knowledge, stimulate open discussions, teach on the early warning signs, tactics, profiles, prevalence, and causes of harassment and bullying. In addition, offer solutions. Workers need to have an understanding and language to identify what is happening to them. Employers, leaders, and employees need tools to address this complex phenomenon. With information, skills, and tools, leaders and employees can prevent and/or intervene earlier before any harm has occurred.
